What is EBT?

EBT (Electronic Benefits Transfer) is a system that allows SNAP recipients in Maryland to use a debit-style card to purchase eligible food items at authorized retailers.

How long does it take to get approved for SNAP in Maryland?

Standard applications are processed within 30 days. Households with very low income or resources may qualify for expedited service and receive a decision within 7 days.

What can I buy with my Maryland EBT card?

You can buy most groceries: fruits, vegetables, meat, poultry, fish, dairy, breads, cereals, snacks, non-alcoholic beverages, and seeds and plants that produce food. You cannot buy alcohol, tobacco, hot prepared foods, vitamins, or non-food items.

Where can I use my Maryland EBT card?

At any SNAP-authorized retailer in the United States. This includes most grocery stores, supermarkets, many farmers' markets, and some online retailers like Amazon and Walmart for grocery delivery.

When are Maryland EBT benefits deposited?

Benefits are deposited monthly based on the first three letters of your last name, between the 4th and the 23rd of each month. Your specific deposit date stays the same each month.

How do I check my Maryland EBT balance?

Check your balance online at the ebtEdge Cardholder Portal, through the ebtEdge mobile app (iOS/Android), by calling EBT Customer Service at 1-800-997-2222, or by checking your last receipt.

What do I do if my EBT card is lost or stolen?

Call EBT Customer Service immediately at 1-800-997-2222 to cancel your card and request a replacement. A new card will be mailed within 7–10 business days.

Can I use my Maryland EBT card in another state?

Yes. EBT cards work at any SNAP-authorized retailer in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Guam.

What happens if I don't use all my benefits in one month?

Unused benefits roll over to the next month. However, benefits are removed from your account if not used for 9 consecutive months.

How do I report changes to my household?

Report changes — such as income, address, or household members — within 10 days through benefits.maryland.gov, by calling 1-800-332-6347, or by visiting your local Department of Social Services.
